InterAcademy Council (IAC)

The InterAcademy Council (IAC) was created to promote counseling for the international, multinational and national government organizations about issues of regional and global importance.

Founder of the entity, ABC is one of the 15 Academies which constitute the Directing Committee of IAC, together with representatives for South Africa, Germany, China, United, States, France, India, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, United Kingdom, Russia and Sweden, in addition to the Academy of Sciences of the World Under Development (TWAS).

Among the studies performed by IAC for The Global Network of Science Academies (IAP), it is worth mentioning the following: Inventing a Better Future: a strategy for building worldwide capacities in science and technology (2004), Lighting the Way: Toward a Sustainable Energy Future (2007), in which ABC had an important role, in view of the fact that the first one was co-presided by the Academic Jacob Palis  and the second one by the Academic José Goldemberg .

In 2010, IAC met in Amsterdam with the objective of deciding upon the acceptance of invitation by the General Secretary of the United Nations (UN), to perform an evaluation of the International Panel of Climate Changes (IPCC). They also discussed the term of reference of a project about waters, to be performed by IAC. The Academic Eduardo Moacyr Krieger  and the international advisor of ABC at that time, Paulo de Góes , represented ABC at the meeting.

Following the meeting of the Directing Committee of IAC, a joint meeting of IAP/IAC was held, in which the Academies were requested to indicate specialists for the evaluation panel of the Intergovernmental Pannel on Climate Change (IPCC). ABC’s Director Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz  was chosen to integrate the Panel, which generated great repercussion among the international scientific community.
